I think the first one is CANDIDATES which is an anagram of DISTANCE (as indicated by OUT) plus A (leading athletes).

Thanks Simon. Once you have given the word CANDIDATES which also mean runners, it looks now clear that it has formed from A (leading athelete) and Distanced (from out distanced) as you have clearly pointed out. Thanks
