The last one! I had hoped to be able to complete this with the help of the ONEGIN answer but I still can't....

Free to mount, for example, on back of whale (5)

Could it be ridge? and if so why?

I think it is RIDGE.
Free = RID
for example backwards = GE
Some whales heve a ridge along their back.

Hi Jenny,
You are right RID to free etc.,GE eg backwards.
I think the Whale refers to the Whale Back Ridge
in Canada,I could be wrong there,but RIDGE is
correct.
