Once again, I've got the answers (I think!) but don't quite follow how they fit the clues:

"Cover bread with Times - it'll keep the rain off" (6) - answer 'brolly'

"Countries fought to acquire these tasty items - unions lost out" (6) - answer 'spices'

"Special soldiers surmount trouble getting man on board" (6) - answer 'sailor'

"Revolutionary traitor, 28" (3) - answer 'tar' (28 is 'sailor')

Bread = roll
by = times as in two by two.

traitor = rat

2 unions = splices - minus L (lost) = spices

sailor - s ail or - special = s trouble = ail - soldiers = OR (ordinary ranks)

I was thinking radar officers.

Sorry I meant radar operators which would have dealt with the special bit.

sorry I should have said OR = Other Ranks (not ordinary ranks)

Where do the countries come in for 'spices'?
