AJT, AJH, Zardoz where are you all? I am about 2/3 of the grid done but not got the links yet. How is everyone else doing?
AJT - why is it "en route" for 6d please?

Good evening!

GULL: try VA.... (goes -- Fr.)

AJT: I agree, though shouldn't that be EEN not ENE? The question mark is troubling. Perhaps it starts with "I". Do the misprints still make valid words? Haven't completed the unclued except for 20a, & can't see another letter working except "O". All others are crossed.
Any idea about the theme? Also misspelled?

Hi - I'm sorry I haven't repled, but I had to go out most of the day. I started this puzzle quite early, then just before I had to go out, came the EUREKA moment. I haven't finished it yet. As far as I have done, the unclued lights are proper words, and the letter that seems to be changed is the one that's actually entered on the grid. Worth noting - the word to be highlighted must consis of 8 letters, and I think there are only 3 8-letter words in the grid. Do you need a clue for the "eight of a kind?"

...and Sudokulover I forgot your query - why en route? Big parts = rout. Chambers (again) gives e'en or ene as evening.
