Hi Penquin,

tolbooth or tollbooth noun 1 an office where tolls are or were collected. 2 old Scots a town hall. 3 old Scots a prison.

You pay your money and you take your choice - my favourite would be TOWN HALL as tolls are more likely to be collected there than in a prison - not that I have any personal experience of the latter!!!

Blessings,

Town hall is a phrase in common use and appears in the dictionary; town jail less so.
