Christians in Iraq? Followers are found in old writings(9)M??DAI???. Th only word I can find that fits is MONDAINES, but both the wordplay and definition escape me. I'm obviously doing something wrong!

I think the answer is MENDAITES, as shown under "Mandaean" in Chambers.... of an ancient Babylonian sect , surviving in Iraq.

I'm afraid the full wordplay also escapes me!

MENDAITES = Christians in Iraq.

MS = old writings(manuscripts), but not yet able to tie up the remainder.

Thanks sarumite. Possible wordplay is 'men' plus 'a' in 'dites'

Yes, "Men" are followers, "dites" are old writings, and the "a" contained is "are".I think this was a very difficults puzzle, with quite a lot of the wordplay obscure. I've put several words in because they fit, and I'm most unhappy as to the meaning of the clue.
