T?E? - I can come up with TIED but why??

and:
26A Tangled stuff, most of it dead (6)
?A?T?D - I can come up with MATTED but again I can't say why

Anyone any ideas ?

For the first I can only think - tide mark.
And matter is dead - so most of it - matte - and d for dead
