23A Didn’t continue with assistance of mike? (6) I have ?A?S?S. Looks like LAPSED (or PASSED, or CEASED), but why?
21D Grosbeak, for one, seizes large quail (6) I have ?L?N?H. Must be BLENCH, but why?

21 Flinch, quail (not the bird!). It's Finch, grosbeak, with L for large inside.
