Can anyone think of the name of a famous scientist, 7 letters, of which the anagram, ?ORA?ES, is a word in Chambers?

There aren't many words that fit the pattern - I just took the ones that did and anagrammed them!

Me, too, malone, but all I can find is a "dynamic" winner (if you see what I mean), 1968, whose name gives a simple anagram (fruit) --- but that doesn't fit at all with my letters (or could one be wrong?). The mystery deepens!

Not a fruit, but a plant (well, plants).

I did what you did, Malone, and came up with an American nuclear chemist which fits the clue.

Thanx 2 both of you --- must admit I've never really heard of him!
