1D is FIEND making 19A FEND.

Well Tend and Fend can't both be right! Easy to make manage=tend but doesn't fit the clue (apparently). Easy to make Fend from 1d - 1 but it doesn't seem to fit the definition.

Just to add to the confusion, there is a Scots word "teind" (meaning tithe) which could be the source of "tend", but doesn't fit anything else. ;-)

fend for oneself - manage for oneself.

Thinking about it again, I suppose if you "fend for your self", you manage on your own so manage/fend does work.

That would be OK if 1A started with "T". Unfortunately it starts with "F".
