Well, you're all smarter than I. Mr Magoo beat me before. Great white wasteland. The 14s -- not a clue except for 9d. That came out of the blue with only S....R..O. Go figure.
HELP! Especially 1d.

Hi Zardoz. Well 1d is an anagram of-"readintheiliad". He's an Italian poet of the middle ages, usually known by just his firs name - which, if you've got the anagram of 1 ac, you will know begins with a D, and is a 5-letter word. Best of luck

Thanks AJT. The "D" did it.
Had originally anagrammed without the "G", but then got 30a. "Comedy writer" should have been obvious, but I took a different spin.
Now to tackle 1a. I know you Brits have a plethora of names for the loo. ;-)

Finally muddled through, & you all thought it was easy! Just can't get into Magoo's head.

Still don't know who LEILA is. Megan Fox?

39a -- assume 30 (RA) means Royal Artillery?
41a -- Now I see the anagram. Whew!

Good morning Zardoz - forget the scrabble tiles. There's a very good anagram facility on Chambers Word Wizards web site. It gave 1 ac at the start. Do try it.
