Am stuck on 1a and have M as the fifth letter out of 8.

Can anyone please confirm 10a is 'in control'?

Still stuck on 13a and 17a. Anyone?

Hi Claire. 13a is PSST by taking the PS from Whoops! and the ST of Stop. 17a is AXE - A + EX backwards. Now I need some assistance please as I am not very happy with the two answers I have because, if they are correct, the clues are very tenuous. For 5a, Frustrate tot, I have SCOTCH and for 6d, Pretence of many a worker, I have CANT. It\'s these two answers which are bothering me. Does anyone have the same answers? Regards, Caravaggio.

Thanks for your help, Caravaggio. I've got 'rattle' for 5a and 'aunt' for 6d which is probably why I can't get 8d (see new thread)!

hi Caravaggio, i have SCOTCH and CANT also; the tenuous clues are becoming the norm. Big Dave has some interesting comments on another site regarding DT staff changes!!

Hi Claire. 8d is, I think, HALFTONE which is HE enclosing ALF and TON. Halftone is another way of describing a semitone but I would argue it should be HALF-TONE ergo '4-4' and not '8'. Having done this Saturday crossword for years, I am not impressed with the compiler of this puzzle,
which is why I have started querying my own answers!

Hi Brian and thank you for your post. If you look at my comments, which followed yours, you will see that I have had a frustrating morning with this compiler and have had a job 'proving' some of my answers.
