Bit player written out during riotous scene at Smithfield(7,5) ?A???E? G?F?E. I can't see my mistakes! Is the second word Gaffe? Please explain the wordplay.

I cannot claim any great knowledge, skill or library - I googled "riotous scene in Smithfield" and up it came! I think sometimes it is the luck of the draw in what phrase you choose. I am just impressed you do the TLS crossword!

You're right. That was the first phrase I googled, but I did not get any mention of Goffe!
