Thanks, syzzie! It looked impossible but turned out to be a quickie. I starred twelve clues, including all of the twelve-letter ones,

That was quick, Aristo.

There's an error in the clue for 9D, (extra letter).

I don't see the extra letter in 9d, syzzie. I have a synonym for death in Mr. Wills's given name. I don't, however, see the significance of the word "letters" in 17d (my only ?).

The name has two Rs. Can't find anyone of note with a single R. Google it.

17D - I think the word is simply there to give a better surface read. Not uncommon for a container clue.

Oh yes. It must be thirty years since I've read his books; just slipped my mind, and apparently the setter's!

I thought it might just be padding. I feel that there shouldn't be extra words in the container part of the clue.

Thanks!

Will you clue Mr. Maltby in gently or whack him with an emotional-trauma lawsuit?

If we're both upset it may qualify for class action.
