Thanks AJH for the Biblio link. Will bookmark it. Some reference works there that weren't familiar. British? Our library canceled its Oxford Ref. access due to budget cuts. Major loss for us cruciverbalists.
Odd that Biblio's Brewer didn't have the entry I gave in a previous post. Any way of seeing what edition they use?

Sorry for the late (early?) post. It appears the Xword Help Forum server is in Britain (GMT 0). I'm at GMT -8 (+1 for DST) -- west coast of Canada.
Sweet dreams.

I think it's finally time to get an up-to-date Brewers. I've relied on the Bartleby online edition 1898?) plus a couple of secondhand volumes, most recent about ten years old, for ages - for the first time, I can't verify all of the answers and tbh there are one or two that have me foxed.

Same here - the SW corner. I thought I'd got the first two, but my waking thought was that Ale, Adam wasn't alphabetical order. Nowhere I can rush out to buy a Brewers today!.

Yes - I would like a Brewer too. Is this the correct one seen on Amazon?:
Brewer's dictionary of phrase and fable -18th edition - aug 09 - £16.72 free p&p (picture of shakespeare in bottom right hand corner)

Hi Sudukolover - I've just looked at Amazon's site, and this is the one I shall order - I happily note that it's Chambers. But wait and see if there are any negative replies here

..and by the way, it seems to me that without something definitive it will be difficult to know whether one has the correct words round the perimeter of this puzzle - too many possibles.
