It looks like CHARACTERISTIC is the answer.
CHARTER (let/letter) containing AC (electrical current) + IS (letterS, S short for IS) + TIC (nervous afliction).

As a matter of interest, did "letters" have an apostrophe in the original clue? Without it the wordplay is, in my opinion, somewhat tenuous.

The answer is correct, but I think you have the breakdown slightly wrong. The electrical engineering symbol for current is 'I', which gives:

CHARACTERS (letters) about 'I' + TIC.

Thank you, John from Arran - your explanation is much better. Like Big Dave, I was also unhappy about the wordplay that I gave, but it seemed close enough to possibly be right.
