Does the digit '1'appear in the grid? I assumed that it didn't because of the symmetry constraint and because I distinguished between the RHS and LHS of the cells, but this seems to preclude a solution for 1 down and 14 down; however, allowing a '1' to appear would permit a solution.

Yes, 1 appears in the grid.

Thank you, kilgore trout. It seems to me that the puzzle is flawed in that it equates a right-hand vertical line to a left-hand vertical line, but ho hum.

It would never have occurred to me that right vs. left side could be an issue.

Hi,
I normally shy away from numerical crosswords. Could someone give me a hint-not answers- to understand this crossword?

Thanks

Grumble,
If I've understood the preamble correctly, digits are repeated in a symmetrical pattern. Eg, if 5 is entered in cell number 6, 5 is also entered in cell number 20.
If you write out the first eleven Fibonacci numbers you will see that there are five possible entries for 5d (and therefore 2d). Two can be eliminated because they result in an entry for 18a that is the product of two primes.

My problem is that having eliminated two of the remaining three possibilities for 5d on various grounds, I've reached an impasse at 11a, where the only possible entry to satisfy the clue to 11a does not give digits that add up to a Fibonacci number to satisfy 17a.

dryden - not had a go at this yet, but do "those Fibonacci numbers " you mention have to be consecutive?

Thanks for the tips. I will wait until the kids are fast asleep before tackling this.

dryden, If a 6 appears in cell 6 what appears in cell 20, a 6 or a 9 (6 rotated 180 degrees)?

There seems to me to be an interpretation problem with the preamble. If, taken literally, the puzzle is the same after a 180 degree rotation then there are only 5 digits (including 1) which can appear. But this would make 12A and 16A the same - clearly impossible. So are we to allow 6 and 9 to appear, which at least give numbers, albeit not the same numbers, when rotated?
