Yes but jazzy if it's used as a verb to quieten as in muting a trumpet. Best thing you can do with some trumpets. Not enough info in the original request.

Here are some more suggestions:

dull, hush, shut, stop, tone

Still think dumb will be what is required

My husband played the trumpet, but never used a mute ! (say no more ;)
