9A: Top speed estimate for old vehicle (5)
Answer is 'crate'.
Now, I 've parsed it as follows but think I've gone wrong somewhere....?
Crate = old vehicle (definition)
c - short for circa, meaning about /estimate
rate - speed
but this leaves 'top' unaccounted for'?
Where have I gone wrong, please? Is there another way of parsing this to include the word 'top'?
Help appreciated!

I think C is the speed of light i.e. the top speed

It is in Chambers

Chambers shows :
c (maths and phys) symbol: the speed of light

Ah, thanks, Jazzy. I should have known that! I was just fixated by the thought of c being the abbreviation for circa!

It's not often I've seen c as the symbol in a crossword. Saga sometimes used it. Usually it is "circa"abbbrev.
