Thanks, syzzie! That was a treat. Favorites are 13A, 8 and 9D. Great construction.

@tevor - hope you get that Rupee back, though a Rand would be better.

@rosalind - the code only needs to be applied to 19A. Not much of a payoff though.
The conflicting letters in the grid form 13 pairs. Under the grid, write the letter that corresponds to the one in 19A for that column.

@ixion - stay tuned. Also for Harper's.

@kilgore trout - welcome back.

@aristophanes - they often have good surface read, even when the clue is easy.
My stars: A 12, 18 (not PC), 27, 31. D - 5, 8.

It was a quick one. Let's hope for an Atlantic level puzzle some time, but I doubt it.
They should offer their services to British periodicals.

Yes, it was an easy one, but these setters are still so endearing. The Atlantic has gone downhill in more ways than one since their departure. Lovely surface read is certainly their hallmark, but the structure of so many of their oldies was pure genius too.

A belated thanks syzygy, I'm slowly catching up. Definitely onthe easier side but very enjoyable, as always. I also starred 5d plus 30a.
