Thanks Malone - New expression to me !

What I don't understand is that I had put plenty of space between the words when typing, but it all appeared in one word on the thread !

You're welcome. I think 'Clutch at straws' is the more common expression - that one comes from 'Drowning men clutch (or catch) at straws'.

I've just noticed that your first post shows an incorrect number of characters - there seems to be 14 rather than the 13 mentioned in the clue. I don't know if there's simply an extra '?' .

I think the posting guidelines request double spacing, personally I don't think it is easy to read.

G??S? A? ST?A?S

Is much clearer in my view.

Sorry for late reply Malone, the extra space was my mistake, so your answer is fine.

Mamya, I did type exactly as you did youself, but somewhere along the line it seems to have lost the extra spaces I had put.

OK, I understand what's happened now - I had put a space between each character to make it clearer, so the extra spaces for gap between words disappeared.
