I've ground to a halt with this one with a few left. As always help and explanations would be much appreciated.
24a At which one may conduct, or conversely play without feeling S?S?R?M. I'm not sure about the first or the last letters.
49a A harsh-sounding build-up ????U?L
Hopefully these will help me sort out the others.

24 Rostrum, on a stage. It's Ro ('or conversely) and Strum, play without feeling.

One left for us this week. Bending Roman law, wearing ermine robe at last (7). F_E_U_A.

Also would appreciate help with parsing 2 down - Fabric husband used for a time to back a ruler (6,3,6). Given the letters we have it seems to be George the second: obviously a ruler, but don't get the fabric bit

Thanks

2 Down was answered, by someone else - the fabric is Georgette and one 't' is swapped for an 'h' (husband used for time'). Georgethe second. George The Second.
