All to do with being in court (magistrates court - not tennis!)
"River in animal house"
Doesn't give number of letters
Other clues have been "group of words" = sentence
"Dispel any rot" = notary
I'm really stuck and need some help!

I think this one will be S-URE-TY, which is a person who puts up money as bail (possible but rare in English courts, though a big industry in the USA).

I always knew that all those years of lecturing law would come in useful!
