Late summer arrival in Amazon dropping a note -- Virgoan??? How does Amazon fit into this

Amazon = Virago - dropping A (lowering) to another position = VirgoA + N (note)

I have always thought of a virago as a termagant where as an Amazon as heroic if that is feminine adjective

The definition of virago seems to include violent, and looking up a thesaurus for virago gives amazon as a synonym. I found that surprising, too.

Who are we to question why

Yes, without looking up the two words, I'd have gone with Moatrat in his post 3, but on looking in Chambers......
It gives 'amazon' as a 'strong, vigorous and aggressive woman' and 'virago' as a violent or bad -tempered woman' .
Anne Bradford's dictionary gives 'virago as a synonym for 'amazon'.
