Good afternoon, all!
6a - A young animal first detached area.
I have C*B*. CUB would be young animal, but what letter finishes it? A - for area?? But that gives CUBA and how does that relate to the clue?

8a - I have A*L*A (ALLOA?? but why?)
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY REPLIES! Chris.

Cube?

8a- the 'some' in the clue indicates the word is held within the rest of the clue. By finding the L in the text of the clue and using the letters i had in .. ??L?A - that gives you HALMA, which is a greek board game

I'm stuck on 5 down

Also - if you have in an A at the start then you must have 1 down wrong i think?

I put in CUBA for 6ac on the basis that being an island Cuba could be described as a detached area. Not the best of clues though!

It all depends on how you read it:

Start with the "A" at the beginning of the clue

Young animal first - cub A
