There may be a misprint in the defn. Some clues are wordplay only.

2d Run loose, foul oily liquid (6)
11d Short phrase in middle of sentence about volcanic ash (6)

I do have some letters but they are not much use as 20 answers have to be adjusted before entry.

It's hard to help without giving the game away, but 2D is a seven letter word meaning 'oily liquid'.

?EO?H?R??L. (possibly 1 2 or 3 of the same letter has been removed). Think the defn is government

thanks malone - i now have 4 of the 5 without defn giving me 4 of the candidates. Which is the 5th undefined clue?

Sorted out the missing 5th, it wasn't missing , just with something else!

Possibly "order" is the defn ... sad = blue ???

44a John's holy map of France? That's right .... grid entry 5 letters ... FR?E? (F is dubious!) frier would fit the 2nd bit but can't see the John's holy map ??
