4 down - inside training ground - Exercise ???? - thought it was Hall but not so sure as can't seem to get 22 across either

4down - could be exercise YARD, as in inside (prison).

Think "inside" as in "doing time" rather than indoors, then the last letter starts your 22a with a 4 letter word for a sharp dressed man around spanish "the" meaning to fool or decieve. Come back if you still dont get them.

I think by getting the yard part of the answer right in 4 down the solution to 22 across is DELUDE.

17d. Meaning to embrace, adopt or promote. European = "E", + partner = husband or wife.
