It could be Callistemon, which I believe is a lilac-like shrub

CALLISTEMON fits but it's a member of the Myrtle genus and Lilac is a member of the Olive genus, so probably not right.

ELUDES is better as it could be both 'baffles' and 'ducks' (as a verb rather than a source of eiderdown).

For the second one, METAL WIRE, MIAMI VICE, MALAY KITE and MAGIC MILE all fit, but none make sense. There's probably lots of other possibilities too.

mulga wire is the word for bush telegraph in New Zealand. sulky = glum backwards, etc.
