clue 12 down 7 letters small dog is misleading

Is this a cryptic clue or just a statement ?

The answer appears to be terrier but I own an Airedale who weighs over 5 stones and is not a small dog Airedales are known as the king of terriers and they come as small medium and large

I only spent over half an hour trying to find a cryptic answer :((

Although, someone without the crossword would have no idea what you were trying to convey in your original post. At least it kept me out of mischief for a while ;)
