Has to be ANAEMIA or ANAEMIC but which and why?

Since problematic and ironic used in the clue I would suggest anaemic. Bloody relating to blood and not ironic being an iron deficiency in the blood (anaemia) which affects red cell production.

Thanks ginge my thinking too but it lacks the indisputable killer persuader that leaves one in no doubt whatsoever.
