Jazzgirl, To my mind the clueing of 44 ac is clunky.
"EINSTEIN" was pithily done in the (daily) Times cryptic from a couple of years ago; it ran thus: "Genius who was called a mug in his own country. (8)"
I think that in the same puzzle there was another cracker:
"A dash for the takeaway." (5,4)
Ans: MINUS SIGN.
I got EINSTEIN;' I didn't get MINUS SIGN.
