Somewhat surprised at the silence thus far on this Listener!

Anyway, thought I might get the ball rolling with with a tribute to BeRo - he will be much missed.

Yes, a full grid, but absolutely no idea how to proceed from here.

It might be of marginal help to know that the next to last sentence of the instructions contradicts the first.

When you are finished, you will be amazed at the construction.

Gridfill mostly not so difficult, though I'm still missing 4 & 18. Assuming my guess for 1A is correct (L-AND-GIRL), I still only have 3 clashes (1st cell of 10, 1st cell of 1A and last cell of 27) - am I right in assuming that both 4 & 18 include clashes ?

Don't worry about answering re 18 : that has 2 clashes (2nd & 4th letters)

I am with Demeter here. I have everything but the shapes. Mersault - do you want the location of the missing clashes.

4 down is a straightforward double meaning clue. The answer is an obscure Spenserian word in each case of the meaning.
