"sore" used to be used for "very" - e.g. "I am sore vexed"

24a. Historian left one going up the wall (4) - L?V?

LIVY (Historian) would fit the definition, and it's got L(eft) + 1, but that leaves VY unparsed. On the other hand, LIVID means 'Going up the wall' so I'd be grateful for any help!

8d. Wheezily make it over the line. having snacked in this case? (4,8) - PUFF PASTRY

It looks like 'Wheezily' = PUFF + 'Make it over the line' = TRY. but how is PAS explained, and why, at the end, does it say 'In this case'?
