Is my brain unusually defective or are others finding this hard to crack? Back soon for assistance if I still can't get started!

Me too, gaperon. After 20 minutes I have 14d (though the clue is wrong), 24d and possibly 17d (though this doesn't work properly either).

I usually avoid these tricksy crosswords, so am a bit miffed that one has turned up in my Saturday Guardian. I may try the Indy instead.

For the across answers two small words (3,2) are left out of the grid - I think

Thanks for that, stumped. Do the clues indicate the answers with the words included, or are both with and without clued?

I should have said that the two small words are left out at the start of the answers

The definition parts indicate the answers with the missing words included, but the cryptic parts exclude them. If you see what I mean.

The definitions are for the whole answer.
The word play gives the grid answers.

Incidentally, chrise, I'm not sure why you say that the clue to 14d is wrong. I agree with you about 17d though. Don't think 'hats off' works.
