I have completed a cryptic crossword but I am unsure about one of my answers.

A dog for the most part getting into bone in good faith (4,4) B?n?f?d?

I have Bone Fide, but why would the compiler declare half of the answer in the clue?

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

a fid(o) in bone
