Two queries this week:
1. Initially heading to sad end around 17 ( 5,4). The clue for 17 is Stoned?. I have stone dead, is that right?

2. Flyers by night? Take nothing away from their smooth order (5) I have - o - h -. Its probably an anagram but I can't see it tonight.

smooth - take noting (o) away - left with smoth - anagram - moths - they fly by night

... and yes,you're right with the fiirst one - stone, and "d" for dead

Stone d(ead) seems a bit weak (what is the answer to 17?)

I don't get it.

Sorry Trevor for delay was just rereading last weeks replies. The answer to clue 17 down was Lapidated which comes from Lapis (stone) hence the "stone dead" connection
