My mother is stuck on two clues in this crossword, can anyone help?

16d - Change for the worse, always, with appeal between two sides (8 letters) _evers_ _ she thinks

The appeal bit is SA (sex appeal) i think.

There is an ancient game called nine men's morris, which is also called merells. The board has 3 concentric squares, and player place counters at intersections to try and make 3 in a row.

Could the counter be a merell?
