Help appreciated parsing the following....

1a. A piece about fine 17 member? (8) - AMERICAN

(17d is YANKEES, so that's the definition, but how does the rest fit in?)

6d. Rover car about to drop off British author (7) - RAMBLER (Rover?)

Is it (ca)R + AMBLER, or is there more to it?

Parse for 6d is fine , heres the author.
