OK, this one is finished but there's a couple that I don't understand. Please can someone explain.

4A - Boost given to old man round lake? It's not physical - PLATONIC

16D - Articulate Earl with fortune entertaining heartless authority on board - ELOQUENT

4a. Old man,(slang for father) PA. Around L for lake =PLA + TONIC (a boost). A platonic relationship is non-physical.

16d. E(LO)QUEN(T). E=earl. LOT=fortune. The queen is an authority on a chess board. A heartless queen is QUEN (middle letter removed.

Thanks Terry. They were the only words that fitted, but I was straining my brain looking for the connections.

Thanks for the help, and explanations. I've only recently started doing the toughie and it makes my brain hurt sometimes - especially when, like John, I get the answer without understanding quite why!
