1d. Half a dozen variable bags mostly to pick up rubbish (6) - VILIFY (Rubbish)

I get the 'Half a dozen' = VI + 'Variable' = Y part, and 'Bags mostly' is LIF(t) - but I'm really struggling to see how 'Bags' and 'Lift' are synonyms - can anyone enlighten me?
