Completed the puzzle but cannot parse 24d
Quantities of fish caught making awful mess at edges of river(6)
I have me-ses so conclude the answer is meases. (A measure of herrings).
Any help much appreciated

An "ea" is a river, says Chambers, with anagram of "mess", for "meases".
