Hi Joker, Found the following;

Main Entry: stead·ing
Pronunciation: \ˈste-dən, ˈstē-, -diŋ\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English steding, from stede place, farm
Date: 15th century
1 : a small farm
2 chiefly Scottish : the service buildings or area of a farm

However if it is not 8 letters, it could be HOLDING (small holding)

Colin
The point I was trying to make was that I had never heard of Steading as a surname. No entry in phone directory for this area(Edinburgh and Lothians)
Maybe it is common in other areas though.
