I have a completed grid but cannot work out the 2 word phrase to write under it that Ifor says can be obtained by following the instruction provided by the excess letters in the relevant across clues. If anyone has been successful with that exercise a pointer would be much appreciated.

I assume you mean EV1158?

Rearrange the letters in the title character of the thematic play to get (5,3) synonymous with "royal relative".

The instruction to do this is obtained by looking at the Nth letter of each across clue, where N is the position of the omitted down letter in the alphabet.

Making R.... K.. !
I was looking at rearranging a 3 letter word in the grid in order to reveal the phrase.
