1a Ring number in anger using mobile network (6)

??A?G?

I think the answer is 'orange' but this gives me a problem with 1 down !

1d Pull up in narrow passage (3)

??T

I think the answer is 'gut' but 1a and 1d must start with the same letter so one of these is not correct.

Can anyone help please ?

Sorry Marnie, I didn't read your post properly (missed the "1a and 1d must start with the same letter ").
They both still seem right to me.

This crossword is another fiendish one from Tim Moorey
If you read through the instructions in the left hand box:
"Eight solutions will be found to clash in four perimeter squares" 1across and 1down is one of the pairs of clues and indeed the answers given here are correct (Orange/ Gut) - what you must do now is solve the "implied instruction of a phrase (4-3-7), and this should lead you to decide whether you choose the O for Orange or the G for Gut.
Good luck

this is a really fiendish crossword for someone of my intellect, and i am really disgusted that you put such a totally inane question for someone of my stature to answer.

Thanks wombat, I had missed the instructions in the box. I have now read them and will probably be spending half the night trying to understand them !!!

Oh, dear. I've read your posts and still don't understand the crossword. I got "gut/tug" but don't know why the actual answer is "opt". As you say - fiendish. It's doing my head in.

Hi Julia
I hope this helps.
The two clues that are synonyms are 14 across and 21 across.
the applied instruction is Good-for-Nothing
or in the case of this quiz G for O, therefore the clues that clash should have a G substituted for the O.
So, looking at 1 across Orange is the solution to the clue.
1 down, Gut is the solution. Following the instructions 1 across must be entered as Grange, which is still a normal word.
