I couldn't figure out this clue yesterday:

26D Join fool in audition (4)

I had ?N?T and pencilled in KNIT which is the answer given today. I can see that KNIT = join, but where on earth does "fool in audition" fit?

KNIT sounds like (in audition) NIT

Audition.n. the power of hearing (so a sounds like indicator)

Knit = join
Nit = fool

Of course, thanks for the enlightenment. Too busy setting up for the Drama Festival to think straight.
