Hi Bullfrog,

I think that the letter 'n' be wrong and word is triapsal which, of course, is an anagram. According to the Blessed Chambers, 'apse' is a semicircular or polygonal recess esp at the EAST END of a church and we all knew that didn't we?

Thanks Caravaggio. The 'n' comes from 21d:
One steamer within another making pounds for the Scots (7) for which I have S(TRAIN)S. The 'p' from Triapsal would make that Straips. How's your Scottish dialect?

Aaaah -- just worked out that it's STRAMPS - a variation on stamps (of the foot)

Incidentally, I'm not from the West Country - the word 'may' is missing from my first sentence!

The word within the brackets is TRAMP - tramp steamer - which now makes STRAMPS and, according to Chambers, 'stramp', if you're a Scot, means to tread, stamp or trample.
