Late doing this today... can't believe the answer?
5D: Stone Age period (5)
S?A?E
It would appear to be 'stage' .....
'St' for 'stone' and 'age' for period, but 'age ' is already used in the clue?
Not happy with this......? what doe anyone think, please?

It's just ST for "stone", then "age". Period is the definition for "stage".

Pretty feeble, I agree.

I checked the Times For The Times website and the blogger there wasn't wildly impressed with this clue.

Thanks both - I did have it right, then. As you say, it just wasn't a very good clue! most unsatisfying!
