All I can fit is fiddle but can't see why.

2. Disconcert with short sharp knocking sounds (6)
??t?l? If fiddle is right, it begins with an E.

I think your 'D' is wrong in the first one and the answer is ZITHER = ZIT (spot) + HER (lady).

How does that affect the second one?

It's OK, I see the second one is RATTLE.
