The answer is sidel - the answer is hidden in the words.

The other one is....idiot proof.

An admirable answer, the only problem being that the clue supplied was wrong. The correct (and very poor) clue is:

21D Large vessel's inner layer (5)

Think Lusitania.

As always, Saint John of A is a Titanic help.

can't reconcile "sidel" with the real clue; any help?

Is sidel a word? - Can't find it in Chambers. Think of the inside of your coat, if Titanic doesn't help.
