9a Forced to part with first instalment of rent (5)
RIVEN.
OK as synonym for 'forced to part' & 'rent',
but why 'first instalment'?

16d Like the king's wine, getting old lord drunk and
sleeping ? (5-3). BLOOD-RED.
Acronym of 'old lord' + 'b' and 'e'. How do these,
('be' ?) relate to 'sleeping'?

Re 9A - Could 'Forced' be Driven, 'to part with first instalment' mean to remove the first letter, D? This would lead to 'of rent' = Riven?

Thanks Mattrom, I had overlooked 'o' as an abbreviation for 'old'.

Nice one, Malone. Many thanks. I couldn't see beyond the 'forced to part' = 'riven'; which is till valid and only enriches the clue.

You're welcome. My parsing can often be dodgy and my explanations even dodgier, so there's no guarantee I've got it right!
